Top Ten 2012 Online Marketing New Year's Resolutions

2012 is now staring us in the face and like with many other things it is a good time to review your SEO and online marketing activities and put down some SEO New Year's Resolutions. We have taken out some time and put together a few online marketing resolutions which should be on your list for 2012:

  1. Create more quality, new, fresh content. Get cracking on creating useful web pages, creative blog posts, viral video, unique widgets or informative newsletter. To attract organic links and visitors, you have to provide something worthy of linking to.
  2. Focus on local and mobile search. Optimise your website for local search terms, mobile devices and smartphones. Consumers prefer to shop locally within 10 to 20 miles of their home or workplace, and 45 percent do not have a particular business in mind when searching.
  3. Share your content. Make it easy to share your content and include link/Like/Tweet/Share/+1 options on all your pages to help grow links organically.  That way you will earn followers, who will help you spread the word.
  4. Understand personalisation. There will be further personalisation in 2012 search results. Google know what you're searching for through secure login, Google+ and Android.  Google also knows where you are when you search, what you like, and who your friends and influencers are, which makes Social Media essential too.
  5. Build a Social Media presence. Use social media to build your community and promote link baits to your website. Regularly invest time in your business’ social media presence, be it a Facebook Fan page, LinkedIn Group, a Twitter account, or a blog. Keep your community engaged with Tweets, updates, posts, comments and reviews.
  6. Get Online Reviews. Don’t be afraid to ask customers for reviews at any opportunity possible. Online review websites are everywhere and reviews are shown in search engines. Reviews are also a positive signal to search engine algorithms about your popularity, directly helping your site’s ranking potential.
  7. Make sure your site works on all browsers. Google Chrome market share climbs in 2012. Web research firm StatCounter noted that Google's Chrome 15 was more widely used in the last week of November than Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8. With increasing number of smartphones and mobile devices you have an ever increasing number of browsers and versions. Make sure your site works on all of them.
  8. Think Niche, become the expert. You bring value to people through your expertise in your area of specialisation, be it a service you offer, a product you sell, or information you provide. As you have worked in your field, you will have learned many things of interest. Make sure you communicate your niche expertise and build your community around your special knowledge.
  9. Check if you can afford Video Marketing. Once costly, online video is becoming an increasingly easy and affordable way for companies to communicate with their audience. More videos are also being watched. According to comScore, nearly 40 million online videos were viewed in September 2011—a 28 percent increase over the previous year. Video is becoming a viable way of engaging with consumers, building awareness, and driving new customer acquisitions.
  10. Develop your Mobile Marketing Strategy. Mobile devices become increasingly sophisticated and affordable. Ever more people are turning to smartphones for entertainment and to manage their daily lives. In 2010, Morgan Stanley Research predicted that smartphone sales would exceed PC sales in 2012. The Gartner research group reported that, by 2015, tablet computers will outsell PCs by 60 percent. Visibility of you business on mobile devices will become more important from here on.
